For those of us who watched Coronation Street or Emmerdale during the 1970’s the only real drama concerned Elsie Tanner’s love life, Bet Lynch’s cleavage or Amos and Mr Wilkes chatting in the Woolpack. Now before every episode warnings are given about the content that is to be shown. If it’s not violence it will be sexual abuse, death, car accidents racism and a whole load of other horrors. I know that the soaps are meant, in theory, to represent real life, but from my knowledge of Manchester and Yorkshire (My wife is a Mancunian), the people there don’t have lives like that. The shows are now just pure sensationalism.
