After insulting the contribution of NATO troops who served in the Afghanistan war, Donald Trump appears to have backed down.

He has given generously praised the British armed forces, but has said nothing about the other NATO nations, who suffered casualties too.

Therefore his words can hardly be regarded as sincere. A case of sorry seems to be the hardest word.
