Something That Most People Don’t Understand

I am reluctant to say this, but it seems increasingly clear to me that most people have an inability to understand compassion and empathy.

This manifests itself in various ways such as misogynistic behaviour, racial and religious prejudice and hostility towards refugees.

This is not something that has developed overnight but now we can see it in it’s full extent. There are various reasons why this is occurring but the last ten years offer a clue.

In this period, much of the western world has suffered from declining economic growth and a fall in living standards. When people are struggling, they often use minority groups as a scapegoat and the growth of far right political parties is proof of that.

It may be just a short lived phase or something that will accelerate, but as any student of history knows, it bears a strong resemblance to the Fascism of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Surely most people don’t want that again?
