If you could have dinner with any philosopher, who would it be?
During the 1980s there was a song titled Dinner with Gershwin by Donna Summer. In regard to a philosopher, I would choose to have dinner with Bertrand Russell.
Coming from a distinguished family (An ancestor of his was the British Prime Minister) He lived to nearly 100, campaigning in the autumn of his life against the horrors of the Vietnam War.
A brilliant mathematical, unlike many intellectuals of his generation, he didn’t admire the Soviet Union, indeed in his early days, he visited there and thoroughly disliked what he saw there.
He was also against religion just as much as communism, finding little to offer there either. He was a fascinating and intelligent man and it would have been a pleasure to dine with him.
